In The Area
Kippford
A five minute walk from the house takes you onto the front in Kippford. There you can take in the stunning views across the River Urr estuary and watch the yachts sailing to and from the Marina As you continue along the front you could stop off for a drink and a meal at the Mariner or Anchor Hotels, or maybe call in at the Ark, a souvenir, gift and speciality food shop.
Just a stone’s throw from the back of the house, you have access to a number of forest trails. For example, you can head towards Rockcliffe and on the way, head up the Muckle for fantastic views of the Lake District, the Galloway Hills and the Isle of Man. Then drop down to the Jubilee Path and onto the Motte of Mark, (the site of an ancient hill fort in Rockcliffe). Once in Rockcliffe, for refreshments, we recommend The Garden Room for delicious lunches and homemade cakes.
BeachesWith 200 miles of coastline, Dumfries and Galloway has a great mix of beaches to choose from with the sea warmed by the Gulf Stream ….and you will find no shortage of choice around Timber Trails. You can enjoy paddling on the beach in Kippford as you head towards Rockcliffe beach just to the east. Then, whilst in Rockcliffe, you can explore the sealife in the rock pools as the tide goes out. Also, just a short drive away, you will love the huge beach at Sandyhills which stretches out towards Cumbria across the Solway Firth.
CyclingThere is no better place to travel on two wheels than Dumfries and Galloway. The ‘7stanes’ biking centres stretch across the south of Scotland and contain a wealth of routes which have been designed with everyone in mind. Dalbeattie Forest Trails are less than 1 mile’s cycling directly from the house. You can enjoy a fun family day out on the ‘Blue’ and ‘Green’ routes, whilst the more experienced can test themselves on the ‘Red’ and ‘Black’ routes. Whilst at Timber Trails, the Dalbeattie Forest Centre is less than one mile from the house, so you don’t need to bother loading the bikes onto the car. GolfWith 29 courses to choose from, golf is in abundance in the region. You can also forget about restricted tee times and crowded fairways as you can almost always get a start time to suit you. In Kippford we have the testing Craigieknowes 9-hole course, with larger courses at Colvend, Dalbeattie, Castle Douglas and Southerness just a short drive further. For more information. Forests/ Walking/ WildlifeThe area combines forests (more than a quarter of Dumfries and Galloway is covered in trees!), ancient woodland, moorland and lochs. On the rugged peaks of the Galloway Hills you will find some of Scotland’s finest views. The region is also brimming with nature and wildlife – get up early to spot the red squirrels, pheasants and deer in the gardens at Timber Trails, or catch a glimpse of the birds of prey, soaring in the skies above.
Local AttractionsWe have something for all tastes right on the doorstep. The children will just love the ice cream at Cream O’ Galloway or the adventure playground at Mabie Farm.
